This week in Transitions... We got a special visit from the Fair Lawn Fire Department, Chief Palmierei. The children were able to explore the truck up close and personal. They even got to sit in it! In class students were introduced to the letter P. We talked about the sound it makes, wrote a lot of P words and worked on P projects. We read Pete the Cat and the 5 little pumpkins.. of course our version became 8 little pumpkins. In science we dissected a pumpkin, discussed all of the pumpkin parts, including seeds and pulp. We used the seeds to discuss the life cycle of a pumpkin and then we created our own pumpkins. We dot painted them, traced over our dotted letters to write out the words and labeled them.We continued to use our pumpkin seeds for counting in math. We created a pumpkin booklet and counted out the seeds on the pages. We also reinforced our number symbols and words in our math centers. We rolled dice to create towers, we matched pictures with the numbers, and used our magnetic numbers then placed them in order on our white board. We also rolled the dice to play a game called roll a pumpkin. (see attached pictures) To finish out our week with P and pumpkins on Friday we made pumpkin muffins! Yummy!
